THE RIVER
The river Toåa flows through the valley Todalen, which is located in Surnadal municipality in Møre og Romsdal. The river Toåa originates in the western part of Trollheimen, and it extends all the way into it Oppdal municipality in Sør-Trøndelag county. Toåa flows mostly in a northwesterly direction and gets its approach from several rivers. Here can be mentioned the tributaries Neåa, Nauståa, Romåa, Bjøråa, Raudåa and Haukåa which are the largest tributaries which flows down into Toåa.
The river Toåa flows into the Todalsfjord which later turns into Stangvikfjorden and further it goes over to Halsafjorden. Toåa is a medium-sized western watercourse with a good population of salmon and sea otters. The river is located in a scenic area where there is an active agriculture, and where the river flows through a beautiful cultural landscape. The cultural landscape is surrounded by lush slopes that turn into high mountains. Toåa has a salmon-carrying stretch of about 8 km, from the river outlet and up to Storfossen. It is facilitated for both private and public fishing on both sides of the river. Todalshytta has its own private zones with CR and fly fishing.

The river is a real pleasure to fly fishing, with its fantastic thresholds and easily accessible pools. You fish well with a one-handed 9/10 foot class 6/7, or a switch 11/12 feet for a slightly larger river. Zpey has developed its own Switch 12 foot class 7 for Toåa (Must be Tested). The river has a good population of both salmon and sea trout. Largest salmon in 2020 was over 11kg, and largest sea trout of over 5kg. However, there were larger fish at the other end of the line that won the battle during in the summer. The river is very suitable for fly fishing and with its many thresholds it constantly arises nerve-wracking battles down the river during the summer.
On the upper side of the big waterfall, trout fishing can sometimes be very good. Normal water flow in Toåa is between 5 and 20 cubic meters, with variations down to below 5 and above 60. Due to the large catchment area, it will be natural with changes based on the weather at all times. Here you will find a link to NVE's measuring meter above Storfossen. The figures from its water flow are calculated every 15-minutes. Click on the link here and you will come directly to NVE's measuring station at Storfossen (Talgøyfoss as NVE calls it)
