THE FISHING
Toåa is a clear western Norway river that is very suitable for fly fishing all season. Catches in recent years have been very good, and Toåa delivers several salmon over 20lb each year, with an average weight between 9 and 18lb with the Largest salmon 52lb.
Todalshytta has Fly Only; as a preference, but depending on conditions, other equipment can be agreed. Feel free to use a hook without a barb, and only one three hook applies to all kinds of equipment.
Toåa also has a good seatrout-strain with a high average weight. Water temperature between 6 and 11 degrees in June, rising to 8 to 14 in July, with varieties based on snow in the mountain, and weather conditions in general. Although most pools on the Toåa are very easy to fish, requiring short but delicate casts, almost any fish hooked has the potential to provide an exciting battle.
The river is a myriad of fast streamy runs, interspersed with boulders and sharp rocky drop-offs and channels. I would go as far as to say that hooking a salmon is the easy part of the equation in bringing salmon to the bank in a good number of pools on the Toåa river.
The bulk of the fish caught is normally between the 9 to 18lb range. This might be considered diminutive if you were hauling it in on a traditional 14-15ft salmon rod but when the fight is conducted with a light single-handed rod, with delicate flies and leader and in a river with numerous obstacles, the battle can be every bit as exhilarating as that with a bigger fish when the proportions are magnified across the board!
